Helping You Getting Focus and More Productive While Coding

Its early in the morning, you make yourself some coffee, breakfast and grab your computer to make your daily task done. But you dont seem quite focus or motivated to even start.

For humans staying focused for a long time during the day and getting tasks done can sometimes give us a hard time, either due to stress, distractions, mood, procastination, etc.

However, did you know music can be your ally in this? Yes, music is a very useful tool in many situations.

It provides us feelings and the ability to keep us focus in our assignments. Still, not everyone knows how to take advantage of the amazing benefits it can provide us. But, the real question is "How music can help me to get my tasks done?"

About Developers

Most of us whenever we want to get focused while coding, tend to look for music like: Piano, Instrumental, Jazz, but you can actually listen to just sounds, like void, rain, tapping on an element, or even the famous ASMR (without any talking)

Well... it's not only about coding. It applies on every area

You may search for things like: 'best coding music' but have you ever wonreded if you really need music? Maybe trying something else may help you get more focused and be more productive.

How can this improve my productivity?

As I told you, the other day I also asked myself like: Why do I have a feeling like 'better' when I listen to something and do my job, that without anything?

As my research was going, I found some reasons that makes sense to me:

Sounds and Music For Developers

Our Development team have worked on this website and we continue working on this project. With that said, everything below is basically based on our experience. Now, as we said previously, this depends on the profile you have at a the moment, because your profile will vary from time to time depending on how you feel. Since we have several colleagues developers, we already asked them what category would they add or if they already fit in one, so... here are the profiles we consider will help you:

Moved Profile

When to use:

Doing something that does not require really deep thinking.

Explanation:

When your mood is like really intense, happy and your heartbeat is faster than usual, this playlist may help you focusing and enjoying even more. All of these will have a fast beat and we personally recommend this when you need to do a repetitive task, something that you already handle without making too much effort.

Deep Silence Profile

When to use:

Usually when nobody can disturb you and you need a really deep level of thinking to understand or do something

Explanation:

I think must of us have been there... 1 a.m. in the morning trying to finish that final project. One thing to highlight here, DON'T LISTEN THIS IF THIS MAKES YOU SLEEPY. Some developers I know they just don't like this kind of music/sounds because it's boring for them or they just fall sleep while listening to this. Consider first doing a quick test: play one of the songs, then close your eyes and start breathing slowly for 30 seconds. If you liked that feeling and when you open your eyes you see the world brigther, this is a 100% recommended.

Strong Metal Profile

When to use:

You need a lot of energy and you want to be alert, with little breaks while enjoying some songs.

Explanation:

This one is one of the most used, for some reason. I clearly understand why, because I've been using this one recently, and this usually helps me getting things done fast, feeling nice and when I listen to 'that' song that we all have, my energy just goes really high. Take into account that you might get a little distracted here, because if you know the lyrics, even if it's instrumental, you may sing the song. Also, if you want to modify and add some lyrics to it, then go ahead and do it, but remember that it's not something we recommend because our brain only focus on one thing at the time (it does it reaaaally fast, so you don't notice). Read our explanation below to understand a little bit more.

Sounds Only Profile

When to use:

This is pretty similar to the Deep Silence Profile, but the difference here is that what you want to get here is to get 'tickles' while listening to small sounds so you can use this when you want to get really focused in something.

Explanation:

We believe that the reason why we love this kind of music/sounds is because you get a sensation that starts on your ears, neck and travels through your body. This sensation usually gets you relaxed, you breath better and you will get the most out of you when you get in this state. It's like a point where everything is fluent and goes out easily. If you like this topic, you can read one blog: Emotions Matter that is related to emotions and how your breathing and feelings improves your productivity.

Inspiration Profile

When to use:

Imagine you have a bunch of stuff on you and you just are about to explode... take 5 minutes listening to this playlist and you will feel better. Also, when you are overwhelmed.

Explanation:

When we hear this kind of music/sounds this usually moves away from reality and you are like in that place in your mind where you have peace and you know that everything is going to work as expected. That's why we suggest using this playlist when there are hard times, because (believe it or not), those are the times where you have to reduce your stress and believe more in yourself. Without that, your brain is not going to be creative, confident and the only exit there is to get things done, no matter how.

Sounds and music we suggest in general to focus

As we explained above, one thing in common that we all share is that we are human beings and one thing that we all have is emotions. Music is directly related with emotions and that's why we are also incluiding a section for people in general (even though, the elements above for Developers may help you, so you should also take a look there). Consider here that you don't have one specific profile, this depends on the situation and how you're feeling when you listen to the playlists below. The main objective behind these playlist is to keep you focused on tasks, so you can play them while working, doing any task, studying and others you feel comfortable with.

Calmness and Sadness Profile

We all had these days where you are just sad, or you feel so calm that all you want to do is to keep that way all the time. This playlist will help you feel better when you're sad and you have to work or you want to get focus and increase your energy. Also when you are calm this will help you keep that status and even make it better, instead of being calmed, you will be relaxed, full of peace and happiness.

Energetic Profile

When to use:

You feel like you just drunk: coffee, coke and energetic .

Explanation:

All of these will have a fast beat and we personally recommend this when you need to do a repetitive task, something that you already handle without making too much effort.

Our investigation about what to listen while coding

Music is everywhere... Our world would be completely different without music and something that is kind of funny that we noticed, is that people does not actually realize how important music is in our lives. Reading some articles, we saw one specific area that uses music A LOT, and people listen to the music and sounds, but is like unconsciously: movies. There was a huge difference watching a movie without the music than with it. It's a completely different one, and there are even messages hidden on the notes, it is just art. That's why it's usually inspiring and help us on everything.

According to Dr. Masha Godkin, a professor at Northcentral University, music activates both the left and right brain at the same time, and the activation of both hemispheres can maximize learning and improve memory, which can help you to concentrate and making tasks.

On the other hand, there are people that can not listen to music while doing their daily work, but why? Well, some people have sensitive hearing and one of the possible reasons is that they get distracted very easily with the music they are listening whether for being too catchy or lively. People that are sensitive to music can over-stimulate their brain to the point that even thinking is difficult. You might be one of them without realizing it. So, what can you do to get productive during the day without losing the thread or getting distracted?

Choose what to listen wisely

What should I listen while coding then?

Choosing the right music can tricky, you might want to listen to your favorite music or artists, but choosing your favorite music can lead you to distraction. Having the right playlist is the key. Your music should make you feel productive. Select something that is joyfull but without distracting you, also something that gives you that extra energy that can lead you to a workflow state full of motivatation and productivity.

Should I listen to music with lyrics?

Music with catchy and lively lyrics may end up distracting you from your tasks. Classical music are the best options for you, there are not lyrics to distract you. Having some background music with no lyrics, such as classical music, may help you to improve focus on your assignments improving motivation and getting into a state of mind of relaxation and increases your mood and productivity.

Instrumental Music

Another good option is that you can listen to your favorite music but instrumental, there are a bunch of Youtube playlist you can use. For example if you like anime music you can listen "Anime Instrumental Music" and just like that with any kind of music you prefer.

Nature/Meditation Music

As a tip, if you dont like classical music listening meditation or nature music such like rainfall, forest, birds, beach, etc; is great for reducing stress and calm your mind without distracting you, if you have never listen these type of music you need to try it out, is very relaxing and peaceful.

Other Culture/Language Music

If you prefer music with lyrics then listening to music in other languages that you dont undertand can be a good option. Think about getting yourself involve into the outside. Every culture is different and have a plenty of different genre options to offer, such as instrumentral, pop or rock, latin, etc. And why is a good option? Well, probably you will not have any idea what the words mean and you’ll be able to keep your mind on your work with a nice background music without distracting you or making you want to sing. Also, is a good way to get yourself into other cultures full of richness.

Conclusion of our investigation

To conclude, be wise; there are a lot of people that do not use music to help them with their tasks during the day, but it can be a very useful tool you can use in your favor and can dig you into a state of mind of relaxation and also productive. Setting the right type of music you know you are not going to end up singing or even dancing is the key for getting productive and finish your assigments in a joyful and delighful way.
